Golden Week Travelers to Fall by 6.9%: Inflation Takes a Toll

The anticipated decline in domestic and international travelers during the approaching Golden Week holiday, beginning at the end of April, is forecasted to decrease by approximately 6.9% compared to the previous year, totaling around 23.45 million people. This reduction can primarily be attributed to escalating living expenses, as reported by a leading travel company.

Despite an increase in travelers following the coronavirus pandemic, more vacationers are choosing to steer clear of crowded areas and take their holidays outside of Golden Week, which runs from April 26 to May 6 this year, according to JTB Corp.

According to the company, traveler numbers are expected to stay near approximately 90% of their pre-pandemic levels. Domestic trips may decrease by 7.2%, totaling about 22.9 million journeys, whereas international visits could increase by 10%, reaching roughly 550,000 this year.

Nearby destinations like South Korea and Taiwan are becoming more appealing because of the weakened yen, according to JTB.

According to JTB’s survey of individuals planning trips within this timeframe, the anticipated expenditure per person for a domestic journey is projected to be around 36,600 yen ($255), marking an increase of 1.4% compared to last year. In contrast, those traveling abroad are forecasted to spend approximately 268,000 yen on average, which represents a slight decrease of 0.4% from the prior year figures as stated.

Based on an online poll conducted in March among 1,846 individuals planning trips lasting at least one night, JTB estimated the number of travelers. This survey spanned 13 days, running from April 25 to May 7, which is two days longer than previous polls.
