Although hyaluronic acid (HA) is widely recognized as the premier dehydrated-skin-fighting component in cosmetics, less attention has been paid to another powerful moisturizer—polyglutamic acid or PGA—which happens to be four times more hydrating than HA. Derived from natto, a traditional Japanese dish consisting of fermented soybeans, this humectant helps address skin dryness and consequently aids in preventing fine lines and wrinkles.
Combatting Hydration Loss
An ultra-powerful ingredient, polyglutamic acid creates an invisible film on the skin capable of trapping and retaining moisture within cells. It’s now known that it can retain up to 5000 times its weight in water, compared to 1000 times for HA. Because it is composed of molecules larger in size than hyaluronic acid, PGA can form this protective film on the skin and thus prevent hydration loss.
Turning Back Time
Fundamentally, polyglutamic acid, due to its strong moisturizing properties, aids in reducing signs of aging, smoothing out fine lines, and slowing down the decline in skin firmness more efficiently than both hyaluronic acid and collagen.
