Cannes Festival: Hotly Contested Films Set to Shine

Eighteen movies were unveiled on Thursday as part of the primary competition at the Cannes Film Festival, set to commence along the French Riviera on May 13.

An additional batch will be announced over the next few weeks, according to festival director Thierry Fremaux during a press conference in Paris.

The following movies have been confirmed so far:

"A Minor Incident" by Jafar Panahi (Iran)

The Iranian director, who has been frequently detained, asked us not to mention anything about his film, according to Fremaux, highlighting the pressures he faces in his home country.

'The Phoenician Plot' by Wes Anderson (US)

A comedic film featuring Benicio Del Toro, Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, and Mia Wasikowska’s daughter Kate Winslet plays.

'Young Mothers' by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Belgium)

The Belgian brothers, who have already won the Palme d'Or for best film twice ("Rosetta" in 1999 and "The Child" in 2005), tell the story of five young mothers staying in a maternity home in their native Belgium.

"Alpha" by Julia Ducournau (France)

Four years following their win of the Palme d'Or for "Titane," the French filmmaker unveils a fresh project featuring Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani and actor Tahar Rahim. This new work delves into the story of a young female character grappling with the AIDS crisis during the 1980s.

"Sentimental Value" by Joachim Trier (Norway)

A film that blends comedy and drama about a filmmaker attempting to rebuild his relationship with his daughters, directed by someone whose previous work, "The Worst Person in the World," was also showcased in competition at Cannes in 2021.

'Romería' by Carla Simón (Spain)

The director from Spain revisits her painful past through a story about a young Catalan girl living in Galicia whose parents have succumbed to AIDS.

"Sound of Falling" by Mascha Schilinski (Germany)

A story that gathers four women from distinct eras on the same farm, each representing a different generation.

'The Eagles of the Republic' by Tarik Saleh (Sweden/Egypt)

Facing the potential loss of all his possessions, Egypt’s beloved actor agrees to take on a part he cannot decline after being coerced by the nation's government officials.

'Mastermind' by Kelly Reichardt (US)

A tale of an art theft woven into the narrative of the Vietnam War and the emerging women's liberation movement.

'Dossier 137' by Dominik Moll (France)

An investigator at France's IGPN agency, which investigates police abuses, probes an incident in which a police officer injures a young man during a protest.

"The Secret Agent" by Kleber Mendonça Filho (Brazil)

A political suspense story taking place in the late 1970s, amidst the last phases of Brazil's military regime.

"Fuori" by Mario Martone (Italy)

A biography film featuring the life of the Italian actress and author Goliarda Sapienza.

'Sergei Loznitsa's "Two Prosecutors"' (Ukraine)

A movie directed by a filmmaker from Ukraine, where their documentary focusing on the "madness of war" was showcased at Cannes recently, is based in the 1930s Soviet Union amid Stalin's purges.

'New Wave' by Richard Linklater (US)

A movie based in 1960s Paris that delves into the creation of Jean-Luc Godard's iconic film " Breathless".

'Sirat' by Oliver Laxe (Spain)

According to Fremaux, it's a "road movie featuring misfits and individuals on the outskirts of society."

'Hafsia Herzi's "The Last One" from France'

The French actor and filmmaker has adapted Fatima Daas's similarly named book, which narrates the journey of the least senior member within an Algerian migrant household as she progressively liberates herself from her familial bonds and cultural heritage.

'The Story of Audio' by Oliver Hermanus (South Africa)

In World War I, two young men make the decision to document the experiences, stories, and melodies of their fellow Americans.

'Renoir' by Chie Hayakawa (Japan)

A story centered around growing up, toughness, the ability of creativity to heal, and a fractured family endeavoring to bond again.

'Ari Aster's "Eddington" (US)'

A movie set in modern-day America featuring Joaquin Phoenix.
