In April 10, Lahore was named the tourism capital of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) for the year 2027. This designation underscores the city’s deep-rooted cultural, historical, and architectural legacy. The accolade marks a major international achievement for both Pakistan as well as the Punjab region.
A 25-person ECO delegation will arrive in Lahore on April 13 to formally hand over the designation. This visit is being organized upon the invite from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. While they are here, the group will participate in an ECO Council of Permanent Representatives session held at the provincial secretariat.
Lahore has now become part of an esteemed list of cities acknowledged by the ECO. Earlier honourees include Erzurum in Turkey for 2025 and Shahrisabz in Uzbekistan. Initiated in 2019, this recognition seeks to showcase the area’s rich cultural and historical treasures globally.
While they are here, delegates will have the opportunity to discover famous landmarks such as the Walled City and experience the Mela Chiraghan festival. Additionally, they will tour the Safe Cities Authority facilities. The senior Punjab minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb, commended this initiative as an essential move towards highlighting Lahore’s dynamic cultural scene.
