From Bank Balance to Bovine Bonanza: Ex-President's 2015 Asset List Revealed

  • The asset declaration of ex-President Buhari from 2015, disclosed by a previous assistant, showcased his relatively simple possessions.
  • The proclamation encompassed vast agricultural land in Daura, featuring 270 cattle, 25 sheep, fowl, equines, and rotating crop cultivation. This reinforced his portrayal as an austere and unpretentious leadership figure.
  • Nigerians have shared varied opinions online; some commend President Buhari for his transparent and honest approach, whereas others doubt the precision and accessibility of his declared assets from 2023.

Bashir Ahmad, who previously worked as an assistant to the past President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed information about the assets declared by the previous head of state back in 2015.

The list highlighted his small collection of assets including real estate, animals, and private transportation, reinforcing his enduring reputation for self-discipline and honesty.

Buhari's ex-aide published the list on X on Wednesday, April 9.

In June 2015, Buhari proactively disclosed his financial holdings publicly soon after he took office, which his press staff characterized then as an "act of transparency."

"President Buhari felt that exemplary leadership begins with being accountable. This is why he chose to make the disclosure public," said his former aide.

Former president's real estate

Based on the summary, Buhari’s property holdings consisted of private residences located in Kaduna, Daura, Abuja, and Kano.

The ex-president additionally possesses a piece of land in Port Harcourt. Significantly, he stated that he does not own any assets outside his home country.

Buhari's holdings in livestock farming, among other things

The asset disclosure also showcased Buhari's strong inclination towards agriculture. He listed his farm holdings in Daura, Katsina State, which included:

  1. 270 cows
  2. 25 sheep
  3. 5 horses
  4. Various poultry
  5. Economic trees along with seasonal crops such as maize, millet, and sorghum

Buhari's humble garage

In a nation where government workers frequently possess collections of luxury automobiles, Buhari's disclosed fleet in 2015 stood out due to its modesty.

  1. One Mercedes-Benz
  2. One Toyota Land Cruiser
  3. Two cars purchased from his personal savings

Buhari's financial assets

In financial terms, Buhari reported having roughly ₦30 million in his domestic bank account as of 2015.

He possessed neither foreign bank accounts nor interests in oil fields, shares of companies, or stakes in any private enterprises.

Reiterated in 2023: The final statement was submitted

After finishing his second term in office in May 2023, Buhari once more adhered to his constitutional duties by filing a new asset disclosure with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Unlike in 2015, however, these documents were not released publicly.

Nigerians Respond to Buhari’s Disclosure of Assets

In response to this development, Nigerians have turned to their X social media platform to share their opinions regarding Buhari's asset declaration.

@F_tabawa said:

While I vehemently disagree with much of what PMB stands for, his integrity remains unchallenged. Serving as both head of state and president for eight consecutive years, he managed to avoid accumulating secret reserves or owning foreign assets.

@Nasir1on1 said:

Can you confirm through tangible assets that at the conclusion of his term, the number of cattle stayed exactly at 270, with the mortality rate equaling the birth rate?
If this is accurate, then we’ve made a significant error. 🥺 On another note, what about your publicly listed assets? Did you disclose those willingly as well?

@Unjoerated said:

Why has he not shown his assets since 2019 until now? It’s impossible to turn black into white. He is the sole president who allegedly took money from the treasury, and once it became public knowledge, they said the president's signature was fake. Neither of you will fare well with this outcome.

APC governors convene meeting with Buhari in Kaduna

Previously, Farovint.ng It has been reported that the All Progressives Congress Governors Forum visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his home in Kaduna State.

The APC governors conducted a courtesy visit as some of Buhari’s supporters defected from the APC to join the SDP.
