FG Introduces E-Visa and Digital Entries for Enhanced Border Security

As part of an initiative to bolster border protection and update travel procedures, the Federal Government has disclosed plans for implementing automated arrival and departure forms within their expanded electronic visa program. This advanced system will be implemented starting May 1, 2025, with the objective of reducing congestion during travels and improving overall safety measures.

The initiative was introduced at a shared press conference conducted in Abuja on Wednesday by the Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, along with the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The ministers highlighted that this initiative represents a joint undertaking with significant participation from major organizations such as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). These entities will be crucial in implementing both the e-Visa system and advanced digital travel documents.

What we are accomplishing today serves as additional proof of this administration’s commitment to promoting coordination among crucial ministries whose responsibilities intersect," Keyamo emphasized. "This instance demonstrates such collaboration, which is specifically related to the launch of the electronic visa system.

Discussing the relevance of the new initiative, Minister Tunji-Ojo underscored its crucial role in enhancing Nigeria’s security structure.

"This initiative significantly impacts our national security framework. Until recently, we've relied on manual processes for exits and entries—travelers used to complete paper forms. However, with the advent of the e-Visa and automated exit and entry systems, this approach has evolved," he stated.

He mentioned that the procedure will now take place digitally prior to boarding, requiring travelers to complete their landing and exit forms online and show these documents to airline staff before being permitted to board.

"Nigeria boasts a population of 230 million exceptional individuals, and our focus should be on advancing technologically. With this in mind, we're implementing automation for the visa application process. It’s worth noting that overseeing airline coordination and establishing guidelines falls under the purview of the NCAA," Tunji-Ojo stated additionally.

This demonstrates our dedication to safeguarding our nation, securing our borders, and ensuring that our national sovereignty is upheld with respect.

The interior minister additionally pointed out that the e-Visa system aims to enhance border control measures as well as streamline entry procedures for travelers.

"The introduction of the e-Visa will simplify entry into Nigeria for individuals while also boosting our nation’s security," he stated.
