In the movie, Violet (played by Fahy) faces a threat where she must either kill her date, Henry (portrayed by Sklenar), using digidrop (similar to AirDrop), or watch helplessly as her child falls victim to an intruder at their house. She can view this terrifying event happening live through her home security camera system. phone .

The intense thriller appears entirely incomprehensible, yet the director shared that being menaced by an unseen force was unfortunately relatable for him.

Landon was appointed the director of Scream 7 In 2023, they referred to the position as a dream job; however, soon enough, circumstances took a negative turn. It has been reported that Melissa Barrera was let go from her position. from her lead role as Sam Carpenter over comments she made about Israel ’s war with Hamas on social media .

Jenna Ortega who portrayed her sibling, Tara, stepped away from the project shortly thereafter , and following an onslaught of online harassment, Landon also withdrew from the project.

Even though he suffered terrible mistreatment, the director has stated that "Drop" was a 'therapeutic' experience for him, enabling him to express what he had gone through.

In response to the dispute that resulted in his exit from Scream 7, he stated Farovint 'I've told others that the film resonated with me at just the right time. I was experiencing many emotions about that situation, and I could strongly relate to Violet's dilemma.'

'You understand, it feels as though there’s someone assaulting you, but you just can’t see them, and you’re unable to actually talk directly to them.'

'Certainly, that was an emotion I was experiencing back then.'

'This turned out to be a very therapeutic method for handling some of those issues.'

Speaking to Vanity Fair He elaborated on the scale of online harassment and disclosed that this was the reason he ultimately decided to step back from helming the movie.

People were making threats against my life and my family’s lives to such an extent that even the FBI had to get involved," he stated. "I received messages stating, 'I will locate your children and harm them because of your stance on child murders.'

Landon and his spouse of nine years, Cody Morris, are parents to two boys who are five and eight years old.

'The person in charge of security at multiple studios as well as the FBI needed to review the threats. They were extremely aggressive and truly frightening.'

The script was penned by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. Landon disclosed to Farovint he became part of the project after getting thoroughly captivated by the action-packed narrative.

'I bit my nails until they were gone while reading the script. I adored the idea, the characters, and the chance to be part of it. It reminded me of a contemporary Hitchcock film. The themes really resonated with me.'

The movie addresses issues of domestic violence and abuse, as Violet works through the trauma of a terrifying previous relationship during which she and her child were threatened with a firearm. Landon stated his belief that films serve as an effective medium for conveying significant social messages.

'It's an incredibly challenging topic to discuss and explore within a film, yet it's also deeply personal for me. I've witnessed individuals very close to my heart experience comparable circumstances, which is why I felt compelled to address it with complete sincerity.'

'And to convey the message that numerous survivors of domestic violence are among the toughest individuals on the planet, and that there is always hope. That is essentially what the film aims to communicate.'

He added: ‘I think it’s a great message for audience members, it’s a good way to talk about the subject.’

The Happy Death Day director explained that while he always aims to make films that are entertaining, powerful messages are often at the heart of the narrative.

'I'm constantly attempting to sneak significant topics into my work subtly, much like hiding something within a Trojan horse. I prefer embedding these profound ideas within highly engaging films. This approach allows me to connect with the largest audience.'

The movie centers around the use of technology for harmful purposes, a theme that has also been explored in various well-known films and television series. This adds to the growing unease as technological advancements continue.

‘I think Black Mirror is a show that’s really spoken to our collective cultural anxiety over technology.

‘I think we all feel it, and we all have these experiences where this thing that was designed for our convenience can still be used against us. And I think it’s a really relatable thing.

'It doesn't matter which technology we're talking about; the real danger isn't ever the tech itself. It's always the people.'

'There will always be individuals with malicious intent who might exploit such situations for personal gain or to cause harm to others. What truly frightens me is the existence of these dangerous people who seek to misuse information or opportunities for nefarious purposes.'

Landon mentioned that naturally, Apple didn’t approve of them utilizing AirDrop in the film, so they created an app called 'Digidrop' specifically for the production.

'We needed to develop our own kind of application and technology since it's exclusive. Many of these firms prefer their products not be employed for malicious intentions.'

He mentioned that this caused him concern because he worried fans might not grasp the technology involved.

'I was quite anxious initially, but as soon as we began screening the film for audiences, everyone understood it perfectly.'

Horror movies have consistently proven to be reliable performers at the box office, and Landon believes that audiences are eager to move away from sequels and embrace fresh narratives—along with a solid throwback to the intense thrillers of the 1990s.

‘Right now we’re in this phase where it’s like everything is sort of IP-driven, or sequel or remake, and so it’s tough for an original movie.

‘Horror movies, luckily, have had a pretty good run theatrically, but I think thrillers kind of went out of fashion.

'I continually mentioned to everyone that I believe the 1990s thriller genre is making a comeback, and I feel it should return. This sentiment definitely influenced the creation of this film.'

He mentioned that he hopes this movie marks the beginning of a revival of entertaining thrillers, which he thinks audiences are eagerly anticipating.

'Using Drop, I'm genuinely hopeful that we're about to enter an exciting thriller era for movie theaters. This would be fantastic, as I believe audiences are craving something distinct.'

Drop is playing in cinemas now.
