Sanwo-Olu Pledges Commitment to Gender Equality and Women's Rights in Lagos

... Senator Adebule inaugurates Lagos-West Assembly, Empowers Women

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, states that the administration led by her husband, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, continues to prioritize gender equality, economic empowerment, and the safeguarding of women's rights within the state.

She stated that Lagos State takes pride in observing a vibrant surge of women taking lead roles and working together, fostering change from local levels all the way up to high-ranking positions of authority.

As the featured honoree, the First Lady addressed the audience at the first-ever Lagos-West Women Assembly, which took place recently in Ikeja.

The Lagos-West Women Assembly is an event organized by Senator Dr. Idiat Adebule from Lagos West, which gathers women from her constituency with aims including individual growth, financial strengthening, and national construction.

The event was graced by the presence of several notable individuals including Mrs Remi Hamzat, who is the wife of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State; Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos; Mrs Sarah Adebisi Sosan, another ex-Deputy Governor of Lagos; Rt. Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, a former Member of the House of Representatives and currently the woman leader for Lagos State’s APC party; as well as Hon Funmi Tejuosho, a former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, along with many others.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu, in her comments, emphasized the need for safer and more supportive environments for women in society.

She affirmed that the Lagos State Government will keep establishing opportunities for women to flourish.

"By means of initiatives like the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, programs aimed at fostering entrepreneurial skills, and conferences centered around women’s issues, we remain committed to opening up opportunities for women to flourish," she asserted.

“At the Office of the First Lady of Lagos State, empowerment remains a top priority. Later this week, we will be presenting various empowerment tools to another group of trained beneficiaries who have undergone sessions on financial literacy and business management. These initiatives are aimed at expanding economic opportunities and enabling financial independence.”

The First Lady emphasized that the foundation of each prosperous community lies in the unity, resilience, and engaged involvement of its women.

As we converse today, I encourage each woman present to take up her part as a nation creator. We shape our families, uphold ethical principles, nurture businesses, and design harmony.

She praised Senator Adebule for this initiative, highlighting it as evidence of her ongoing dedication to advancing women's development and making an impact at the community level.

"The Lagos-West Women Assembly is both relevant and strategic as it offers an inclusive platform for connections, skill development, and collaboration between citizens and government," stated Dr. Sanwo-Olu.

The First Lady praised the empowerment grants, stating that uplifting women leads to stronger communities and ensures a better tomorrow.

According to Daily Independent, one of the standout features of the well-attended events was Senator Adebule empowering 250 women through cash awards.

During an event where various individuals were awarded differing prizes such as power generators, ovens, and minibuses aimed at aiding their business ventures, attendees from multiple sectors within the Lagos West district emerged as winners.

During her speech, Senator Adebule stated that women form the foundation of every society, emphasizing that their impact across various aspects of life should not be overlooked.

The ex-Lagos Deputy Governor mentioned that the economic and social hurdles faced by women in accomplishing tasks and reaching their objectives motivated her to establish the Lagos-West Women Assembly.

Senator Adebule stated that their path to forming more robust communities starts with offering pertinent social, economic, and political education to women and young people. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of imparting practical soft skills and fostering financial independence—elements crucial for invigorating these groups as leaders across various fields, including politics.

As such, the women attending this gathering have been thoughtfully chosen to serve as exemplary representatives of the commendable and attractive ladies from Lagos-West. Our aim is to equip them with knowledge, inspiration, and motivation so they can better fulfill their inherent responsibilities as architects of more robust and resilient societies.

Dr. Adebuke highlighted several of her initiatives and accomplishments during her tenure as senator from the Lagos West District. She mentioned that she has supported skill development programs and provided grants to numerous women and young people throughout different periods.

"I have initiated several capital projects aimed at benefiting the Lagos-West constituency. These initiatives are currently at different phases of completion," she stated.

Several of the mentioned initiatives include: building market stalls within the Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA area under the jurisdiction of Alimosho Local Government; erecting a Skills Acquisition Center located in Damingoro for the benefit of residents in Mushin Local Government; constructing a Primary Health Centre situated in Igbolobi town which falls under Ojo Local Government control; finalizing an advanced Youth Development Centre equipped with a 300-seat capacity Computer-Based Training center in Badagry Local Government territory; as well as developing a set of 36 classrooms at Awodiora Primary School found inside Awodiora Estate managed by Ajeromi-Ifelodun local authority; amongst additional ventures.

Although she has introduced seven bills and two motions, the senator pledged to increase her efforts in advocating for her constituents.

At the same time, she urged all parties involved to collaborate in enhancing the socioeconomic status and empowerment of women, with particular emphasis on eliminating the cultural and political obstacles that restrict their involvement in constructing a more robust community.

Two speakers were invited to speak on the theme of the assembly, ‘Building Stronger Community’.

In her presentation, the Founder of Women In Successful Careers (WISCAR), Amina Oyagbola, encouraged women to start their leadership journey at the grassroots.

Oyagbola stated that the present condition of women's representation in leadership roles in Nigeria serves as a clarion call for action.

As for the CEO of City Counsellor, Mrs Yetunde Oriolowo, she stated that women ought to prioritize their overall well-being, with particular emphasis on maintaining good mental health.

She praised the Lagos-West Women Assembly initiative, recognizing its crucial role in bolstering women's mental health.

As females, if we aim to make a positive impact on ourselves, our families, and our societies, it's crucial to prioritize our well-being, particularly our mental health.

“We play a lot of roles. We look after the children, care for the family, support our husbands, engage in home chores and even contribute to community development. It is, therefore, very important for us to take care of ourselves. We should create a time for rest and relaxation,” she said.
