- Nons Miraj's response regarding men's involvement in her success sparked varied opinions among internet users.
Nigerian skit-maker Chinonso Ukah, known as Nons Mira, has dismissed assertions suggesting that a man played a role in her achievements.
The media personality and YouTube star recently discussed her journey during an interview on The Rolls-Royce Experience (TRRE), detailing the steps she took to build her reputation through relentless effort.
The 31-year-old TV presenter, who identifies herself as someone with a business acumen, began her journey by styling hair at her salon and simultaneously pursuing a career in acting.
Nons Miraj mentioned that she previously earned N30,000 for acting in movies, which was modest when contrasted with individuals in conventional jobs earning at least N70,000 per month. She explained that even if she managed to secure roles in three films within a single month, bringing in N90,000 total, this income still fell short as it didn't suffice for her basic needs.
Nonetheless, this marked only the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey. Nons Miraj mentioned that she expanded into selling fragrances and accessories as well. She shared that she visited locations such as churches or beauty parlors where she believed many female customers could be found. She stated:
When I first began, it all revolved around hairstyling; I owned a salon and worked in film production. At that point, they paid me 30,000 naira per movie, which felt insignificant since typical monthly salaries back then ranged between 60-80 thousand naira. If you managed to work on three productions within a single month, you could earn about 90,000 naira. However, considering expenses such as purchasing creams, traveling via taxis to sets, this income wasn’t really worthwhile. This lifestyle didn’t align with my aspirations, so instead, I ventured into selling watches and fragrances. Being quite entrepreneurial-minded, I focused primarily on these items—specifically targeting places like churches for perfume oils and salons for accessories and jewelry. I sourced products wholesale from markets like Balogun, acquiring them for approximately 3,000 naira each before reselling them for upwards of 50,000 naira apiece. Upon returning home after sales trips, I divided the earnings equally: half went directly into savings kept safely away, whereas the remainder supported day-to-day living costs. While this approach attracted male attention, none provided significant financial support needed to elevate my status significantly. Despite being involved in various ordinary romantic relationships without experiencing anything akin to traditional sugar daddy dynamics.
Furthermore, Nons Miraj mentioned that everything transformed for her once she chose to harness the potential of social media. This shift led filmmakers to offer higher payments since she was no longer pursuing them actively. She stated that rather than receiving ₦30k, she began earning between ₦300k to ₦400k.
In her words:
I began promoting myself through social media actions since platforms like these hold significant influence. So, I decided to create content on social media that would catch the attention of those in the film industry. Instead of having to pursue them for modest offers as I was previously doing, my efforts would lead them to seek me out and provide substantial deals.
I earned my first million dollars, and the way I managed to achieve this was by entrusting my mom with the money so she could save it for me since I knew I'd probably spend it otherwise. When Mom informed me that we had reached the milestone of one million, I couldn't believe it at first. She then transferred the funds to me. My 'kolo' business and hair salon in Ago Palace Way were still running during this time, and as word spread through social media, more opportunities came knocking. Initially offered around ₦30k per gig, rates soon escalated to ₦300k and even ₦400k. It became clear that these offers increased due to growing recognition. By then, I already enjoyed some level of fame and wasn’t keen on returning to acting.
Nons Miraj mentioned that when she left acting behind, she transitioned into making skits and presented the Ada Jesus character to audiences. This move allowed her to earn millions through endorsements from various companies. Additionally, she began working alongside fellow skit creators such as Brainjotter and Zicsaloma, whose popularity was surging at the time, ensuring her content reached a wider viewership.
I made the transition to Ada Jesus, earning income through skit performances and skincare routines; people paid me around ₦1 million to ₦1.5 million for endorsement deals lasting three to six months. This continued successfully until I decided to move to the island where I leased a modest apartment and gathered some friends who lived and moved with me. I acquired a Crosstour vehicle and began focusing more on strategic collaborations rather than solely relying on hard work. By teaming up with influencers like Zicsalama and Brainjotter—who had large followings—I ensured their audiences saw me too. Throughout this journey, I have consistently prioritized being a business-oriented individual.
Nons Miraj mentioned that the concept for her love game show, Hunt Games, originated from her experience with skit-making. She found success after testing it out. This public personality stated that she began earning thousands of dollars through YouTube, emphasizing that no one could offer her as much just to be in a relationship with her.
