The federal government aims to bolster its defense capacities via targeted cooperation with Pakistan’s military forces.
Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, emphasised the country’s commitment to enhancing its military prowess during a meeting with a high-level Pakistani delegation led by General Shahir Shamsad.
The announcement of this development was included in a press release distributed to journalists on Friday by Mr. Mati Ali, who serves as the personal assistant for media and public relations to the minister. This occurred following a meeting between a senior Pakistani delegation headed by General Shahir Shamsad and the Nigerian minister at the latter's office located in the Ship House in Abuja.
In the declaration, the minister praised Pakistan’s efficient anti-terror tactics, noting they serve as an excellent model for Nigeria to explore.
Pakistan has successfully tackled the issues posed by terrorism and improvised explosive devices through the use of indigenous technology and cost-effective drones.
"The meeting underscored the lasting bond between Nigeria and Pakistan, which is based on mutual respect, common difficulties, and converging strategic goals," Abubakar said.
Accordingly, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence emphasized that joint efforts would enhance military capabilities, promote mutual understanding and deepen trust between the two countries.
"The partnership between Nigeria and Pakistan has laid a strong groundwork for enhancing cooperation in the defense industry," Abubakar noted.
He therefore stated that this foundation will facilitate partnerships in critical areas, including drone technology and advancements within the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
He, however, hinted further that future cooperation between Nigeria and Pakistan will focus on boosting local manufacturing capacity and innovation in military hardware, adding that “this will enable Nigeria to develop its defence industry and reduce reliance on external sources.”
The minister promoted collaborations free from conditions or pressure, highlighting the importance of fostering and enhancing ties between Nigeria and Pakistan.
He identified Nigeria as a key actor in Africa, noting its considerable geopolitical significance for Pakistan. He stressed that enhanced collaboration between them would be advantageous for both countries.
"The development marks a crucial advancement in strengthening defense ties between Nigeria and Pakistan, offering potential advantages for both nations through their collaboration," he stated.
