MTN Gifts State-of-the-Art Classrooms to Iwerekun Community High School

In an impressive showcase of corporate volunteering, MTN employees, via their Y'ello Care program, have refurbished a school building at Iwerekun Community Senior High School in Lakowe. Their work has reignited optimism and greatly enhanced the educational environment for pupils and educators alike.

The initiative, spearheaded by committed MTN staff members, forms part of the yearly Y'ello Care drive, aimed at strengthening communities via education, digital access, and financial assistance.

Before the renovation, pupils at Iwerekun Community Senior High School encountered difficulties such as decaying classrooms that impeded productive education. Realizing the necessity of action, MTN employees took initiative to revamp the educational area, establishing a secure, suitable, and motivating setting for both learners and educators.

During the inauguration event, Honourable Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, who serves as the Commissioner of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, highlighted the importance of MTN’s support in education: "Globally, progress within the educational sphere relies heavily on cooperation and dedication from both governmental bodies and corporate entities. We genuinely appreciate MTN's substantial donation and extend heartfelt thanks for consistently backing education initiatives across Lagos State. With this newly established facility, we aim to create an optimal setting for instruction and academic growth, thereby empowering our pupils to achieve excellence."

Prince Mukaila Adeola, representing the Ojomu of Lakowe, conveyed the community's thanks: "This is an exceptional chance, and moments like these do not come often where Lakowe receives such backing. We genuinely value MTN's contribution and eagerly anticipate further assistance in days ahead."

The refurbished school section features enhanced water systems and comes with an inverter, all set within a peaceful atmosphere that boosts educational engagement. This upgrade guarantees a more pleasant and eco-friendly environment for both students and educators.

Speaking on the significance of the project, Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer (CCSSO) at MTN Nigeria, emphasised the personal investment of MTN staff: “I want to emphasise that this commissioning was made possible by the dedicated staff of MTN. Although MTN has a Foundation funded by 1% of the company’s annual profits, the credit for this commissioning goes to the MTN Nigeria staff members who, through their personal contributions, made this happen.”

Apart from receiving a new layer of paint and significant structural enhancements, such projects instill a enduring positive effect and optimism among the student population. By incorporating dependable electricity and water systems, these efforts ensure that students do not face challenges posed by inadequate facilities, enabling them to concentrate more effectively on learning.

For many students, access to quality education remains a challenge—not just because of financial barriers but also due to poor infrastructure, lack of resources, and limited teacher support. Programmes like Y’ello Care, alongside other education-focused volunteer initiatives, are helping to fill these gaps by creating safe, well-equipped learning environments and equipping students with knowledge beyond the classroom.

Following the successful conclusion of the Lakowe school initiative, MTN reinforces its dedication to education and youth empowerment. The firm advocates for increased participation from other organizations in volunteering and community service, highlighting how collaborative efforts can significantly drive social advancement.
