Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu has conveyed profound sorrow following the demise of former captain and coach of the Super Eagles, Christian Chukwu, referring to him as an iconic figure in football, a giant, and a remarkable talent.
Responding on Saturday, Mbah stated: "The news of Chairman Christian Chukwu’s death reached me with profound sorrow. This is not only a personal bereavement for us but also for Ndi Enugu, his native state, and for Nigeria as a country and Africa as a whole."
Christian Chukwu was a national icon, a soccer legend, field marshal, and marvel. As a player, his achievements brought together people from various ethnic backgrounds and beliefs.

He embodied patriotism, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his country and Africa through his roles as a player and coach for the immensely successful Rangers International Football Club of Enugu and the Super Eagles of Nigeria. As captain, he led them to triumph as the Green Eagles at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Additionally, he coached Kenya's senior men's national team, the Harambee Stars, along with several other teams.
Affectionately known as Chairman, he dedicated himself entirely to both his country and the broader continent of Africa. His achievements were inscribed in golden letters in the chronicles of Nigerian and African soccer history.
Our beloved legend has followed the path of all earthly beings, yet the warm memories and the pride he bestowed upon Nd'i Igbo and Nigeria as a whole will endure indefinitely.
My thoughts go out to his family, Ndi Enugu, the Nigerian sports community, and the whole country for this irreparable loss. May God Almighty grant him everlasting rest.
