Chennai (Tamil Nadu), India, April 13 (ANI): The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ( TVK ) president and actor Vijay has submitted a plea in the Supreme Court questioning the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025.
Several petitions were filed in the apex court challenging the Act, contending that it was discriminatory towards the Muslim community and violated their fundamental rights.
The Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on April 4 with 128 votes in favour and 95 against. The Lok Sabha had earlier cleared the Bill following a lengthy debate, with 288 members voting in favour and 232 opposing it.
On April 5, President Droupadi Murmu provided her approval to the Bill, thus turning it into law.
Those opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Act include AIMIM member of parliament Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress members Mohammad Jawed and Imran Pratapgarhi, AAP assembly member Amanatullah Khan, as well as Chandra Shekhar Azad, leader of the Azad Samaj Party and also an mp.
Other notable figures include Samajwadi Party member of parliament Zia Ur Rehman Barq representing Sambhal, Maulana Arshad Madani who leads Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, the group known as Samastha Kerala Jamiatul Ulema based in Kerala, the Social Democratic Party of India, the Indian Union Muslim League, along with the civil rights advocacy organization called the Association for Protection of Civil Rights.
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has similarly contested the Act, stating that they firmly opposed the amendments approved by Parliament, deeming them "arbitrary, discriminatory, and rooted in exclusivity."
Senators Manoj Jha and Faiyaz Ahmad from Bihar’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have contested the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2025, asserting that it enables extensive governmental intrusion into Muslim charitable trusts. Additionally, RJD legislator Muhammad Izhar Asfi from Bihar has opposed this legislation as well.
The governing party in Tamil Nadu, DMK, has also become part of the legal challenge. ItsMP, A Raja, who served as a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf Bill, has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.
Applications for intervention have been submitted in the Supreme Court in favor of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, indicating that the changes align with the purpose of the act Constitution in India, ensuring that no rights of any member of the Muslim community are violated.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, aims at enhancing the administration of waqf assets, strengthening involved parties, boosting the effectiveness of surveys, registrations, and resolution procedures, as well as fostering the development of waqf properties. (ANI)
